There’s little debate that today’s laundromats offer significantly larger overall capacity. Thirty to 40 years ago, stores would have leaned on a heavy population of top load washers and small dryers.

Today, capacity rules. Washer-extractors of the 40-, 60-, 80- and even 100-pound variety with equally large matching tumble dryers are the backbone of successful laundries. The bottom line is customers increasingly want multi-load flexibility. Meeting that need requires additional square footage and that means overall store size is trending up.

Planet Laundry spotlighted this industry development in a recent article titled, “Big Time.” In the article, Dan Bowe, general manager of North America franchising and retail operations for Speed Queen Laundry, shares his insights on the topic.

“… it’s important to note that while larger square footage stores are popular, the footprint is still driven by the market and demographics – bigger is not always better,” Bowe said in the article.

The article comes as the Speed Queen Laundry franchise added a flagship mega store in the Chicago area. To read more about this more than 12,000-square-foot store, click here.
